[1]

Expression of oneself, not simply ideas, but subtle feelings or realisations. Spontaneous speech, voice that speaks through or to one: our personality or mind is not a totally unified whole. Some aspects of self we may not identify with. Because we disown them, they become split from our main expression. Contacting them may be like meeting a stranger— thus in dreams they are shown as exterior to self, or a separate voice, perhaps disembodied. Also some aspects of self express spontaneously—see autonomous complex.

The voice may therefore be one’s intuition; expression of unconscious but not integrated parts of self; fears; the Self being met in the dream.

Example: ‘I was going mad. I was crawling around on my hands and knees and wailing and behaving in a most peculiar manner. I actually felt mad. But inside my head a tiny voice kept saying, “You aren’t completely insane yet—there’s still a chance.’’ People around me kept saying to each other, “We think she’s possessed by devils.’’ My sane voice then said *’Make the sign of the cross, cast out the evil spirit.” I kept trying to do that but my hands wouldn’t or couldn’t complete the sign. I woke still feeling disturbed’ (Margaret F). Margaret has fears about her sanity.

The voice here is that of her unconscious, speaking from a more whole view of her being. Such a voice might very well be the voice of one’s fears and confusion, however.

Example: ‘My present lover, Tony,’ and a man I had loved years before were standing side by side.

A voice was telling me to go to Tony (Miranda L). Here Miranda’s unconscious is summarising her feelings and helping her transfer her feelings of love connected with the past to her new lover.

The voice is the tool we use to express ourselves, so when you hear voices in your dreams the unconscious aim is to draw your attention to the information being given. From a psychological point of view, when you repress certain parts of your personality they can surface in dreams as disembodied voices; dream voices could therefore be drawing your attention to aspects of yourself that you are neglecting or denying in your concern with everyday distractions.

If the voice was that of God or an angel, this may also be an expression of your intuition or unconscious wisdom that is not yet integrated into yourself.

Recognizable voices may remind you friends or family who have been neglected.

If you hear a call or cry as if from a great distance, your unconscious may be suggesting that someone you know is in distress. It could also indicate that you should not be so proud and seek support from others when you need it.

If the voices in your dream come out with nothing but babble or gibberish, this suggests barely controlled rage that needs to be confronted and dealt with if it is not to erupt and create chaos in your waking life.

[3]

To dream of hearing voices, denotes pleasant reconciliations, if they are calm and pleasing; high-pitched and angry voices, signify disappointments and unfavorable situations.

To hear weeping voices, shows that sudden anger will cause you to inflict injury upon a friend.

If you hear the voice of God, you will make a noble effort to rise higher in unselfish and honorable principles, and will justly hold the admiration of high-minded people.

For a mother to hear the voice of her child, is a sign of approaching misery, perplexity and grievous doubts.

To hear the voice of distress, or a warning one calling to you, implies your own serious misfortune or that of some one close to you.

If the voice is recognized, it is often ominous of accident or illness, which may eliminate death or loss.

1- The voice is a tool that we use to express ourselves. We all have inner awareness of our own state which is sometimes difficult to disclose. Often in dreams we are able to use our voices in more appropriate ways. Often we are spoken to in dreams so that we remember the information given.

2- A voice that speaks through, or to, one has two areas of significance.

If one believes in the spirit realm, this is communication from a discarnate spirit. More psychologically, when we suppress certain parts of our personalities they may surface in dreams as disembodied voices.

3- The Voice of God is a term which is used to describe the energy of a spiritual summons.

[6]

This dream could have different connotations. So, if you hear a voice that you do not recognize, it could mean that your subconscious is trying to tell you something of vital importance. All that you can be found inside you: you should simply learn to listen at the appropriate moments. On the other hand, dreaming that you are losing your voice reflects a notable lack in determination and security in yourself. (See Also: SCREAMING, SOUNDS, CALLS)
