Jung pointed out that one of the dangers for the person embarking on a journey to psychological wholeness is that they can fall victim to what the Greeks call ‘hubris’. This describes the fate of a person whose head has become swollen with powers that are not his personally. The myth of Icarus, who flew too high, causing the sun to melt his waxen wings so that he fell to his death in the sea below, is a classic example of pride before a fall.
