Diving Dream Interpretation

(1) Diving may be a sexual symbol, representing male penetration. Water often symbolizes the feminine.

(2) (Deep) water sometimes symbolizes the unconscious; so diving may symbolize descent into the unconscious.

If this is the case, it will usually be a sign that your dream is recommending you to get in touch with your unconscious. Perhaps there are unconscious motivations - desires or fears - that are causing you to function inefficiendy; some neglected or undervalued part of you that you need to learn to respect and utilize if you are to achieve (fuller) satisfaction or happiness.

(3) There are myths of divers who plunge to the depths of the sea and bring up treasure. In psychological terms this represents either what is described in (2) above or the ego descending into the unconscious and finding the self (See Also: Introduction, page44).

(Pearl fishery, Plunge) Ifone sees himself diving into the ocean for pearls in a dream, it indicates his attachment to worldly treasures. Ifone sees himself diving into the waters and finds out that he could get nothing out of it except mud in his dream, it means distress caused by someone in authority.

If one brings a pearl out of the water in a dream, it means marriage or acquiring knowledge or discovering a treasure. Ifone dives into a river and finds it difficult to come out of the waters in the dream, it means that he will suffer from burdens he cannot carry, or bear patience with adversities. Diving into the ocean to extract pearls from oysters in a dream also means seeking knowledge or wealth.

Either exploring the depths of the soul, or trying to deny something. Diving is an image of flight. It also means regression into a pre-birth condition and a preparation for rebirth (a new beginning). Diving dreams always deal with an Adventure where the dreamer is surrounding himself with Water (emotions). Such experiences may be ecstatic or full of fear. In most cases, however, they are an image of liberation. After all, moving in water is easier than on land.

When a diver plummets into water, he or she intends to symbolically rush below the surface into both the world of emotions and the unconscious mind, as water represents both of these domains.

The dive then becomes the ritualized expression of not only the intention to do so but also the skilled creative expression of the act itself. In this way, a dive is symbolic of the practiced and majestic way that someone has prepared to courageously explore the hidden depths of his or her own nature.

In general, water represents the subconscious. Diving into it symbolizes our insertion into the most hidden parts of our mind. On the other hand, the dream could be encouraging us to be opportunists, and that you dive in regarding a particular issue.

In many myths, the hero dives into the depths of the sea, and returns to the surface with a great treasure. In the case of dreams, this represents the self that ventures to explore the subconscious and finds the valuable and true self.

Vision: Diving under water: only diplomacy will you get out of a difficult situation. Diving into a calm lake: you want to get to the bottom of something and gain new insights—to straighten things out with yourself.

Diving into the ocean in a dream may represent diving into subconscious memories, which may need to be explored in order to heal deep issues. Diving and gazing at fish may suggest exploring or coming into direct contact with all the abundance and creativity’ that is available to you through exploring your subconscious. Diving may also appear as a response to feeling submerged.

To dream of diving in clear water, denotes a favorable termination of some embarrassment.

If the water is muddy, you will suffer anxiety at the turn your affairs seem to be taking.

To see others diving, indicates pleasant companions.

For lovers to dream of diving, denotes the consummation of happy dreams and passionate love.

From a Freudian standpoint, diving into water may represent sexual intercourse. Also, bodies of water appearing in dreams often symbolize the unconscious, so diving may indicate jumping into and exploring the unconscious. More mundanely, diving in a dream may simply reflect a task from waking life into which we are “diving.”

Diving in a dream suggests that you are trying to “get to the bottom” of a current situation or feeling. Water symbolizes the unconscious. Thus, another interpretation for this dream may be that you are delving into your unconscious. Finally, Freud thought that diving may have sexual connotations and represents intercourse.

To dream of seeing young men and women diving gracefully into deep water is an omen of pleasant companionship with those you love.

If you yourself are diving without great effort, the prediction is of an achievement that will gain you many friends.

Taking a chance; facing anxiety. Diving underwater: delving into one’s mind or unconscious. Exploring the mean­ing of a dream, or an eventful meditation, might be depicted as diving underwater in dreams.
