Universal Landscape: An overwhelming or dangerous block to effective communication.
Dreaming Lens: Were you choking in the dream? Was someone else? Were they choking on something they swallowed? Was the choking the result of a violent act perpetrated on one person by another. Were you choking someone? If so, who was it? If you or someone else was choking on food, was the choker rescued?
Personal Focus: Any experience that connects with the neck and throat places us in the realm of communication. When someone is choking, their ability to speak is limited or even eradicated. Someone choking or being choked in a dream is dealing with communication issues that are intense enough to be, at least symbolically, a matter of life and death.
If there is some thought or idea that you need to express in your life right now, a dream with this image indicates that there is some sort of block to that expression. This image is so violent that it is likely pointing to something that is very intense, to say the least. When exploring your interpretation, look to where issues of communication are connected to people, places, or things, and where the stakes feel very high.
There are two categories that the idea of choking will fall into. You can choke on something you have ingested, such as food, beverage, or a small object. Or, the choking can be the aggressive act of another person attempting to stifle the breath and perhaps life out of the victim by stopping the flow of breath from passing into the lungs. Whatever the case, the key factor involved is the breakdown of the ability to communicate where the cost and impact could be so great as to cause death.
In the first construct, where there is an object that is being choked in, the object itself needs to be considered as part of your interpretation. If it is food or drink, then some aspect of nurturance and self-care is not being acclimated properly. If it is any other type of object, what it is must be interpreted and that meaning should be incorporated into your perspective of why you are feeling blocked. If you are being attacked by someone, use the Character Aspect technique to identify what part of your personality is choking off your ability to express yourself. If you are choking someone else, consider that you may be trying to stifle a particular way of communicating in the world that may be out of control or not serving you in some way. (See Also: Strangling.)
[1]Dreams in which you are fighting to breathe are usually to do with a sense that the external environment, or your inner attitudes or fears, are threatening to kill your pleasure in living. Dreams in which you feel you are being choked or strangled may suggest that that there is something in waking life that is choking, strangling or squeezing the life out of you—a job, a relationship or a situation.
You feel stifled by people or circumstances and are not in control of either. Choking in dreams also suggests an inability to express yourself properly in waking life. There may be some kind of conflict or indecision about whether or not you should speak out or hold your tongue.
If you struggled to breathe in a smoggy or smoke-filled atmosphere of a polluted dream environment, this could suggest that you are finding your reallife circumstances claustrophobic and stifling to your individuality and personal growth. Or do you feel that the demands of your job or lifestyle are killing your curiosity and creativity? If you were strangled by someone, this suggests you may be holding back feelings as most of our feelings create sounds, such as laughter or crying; an attack on the neck is thus an attempt to stifle these emotions. Whatever you decide caused you to fight for air in your dream, be it a positive or a negative influence, your unconscious was probably warning you to broaden your horizons and let some metaphorical ‘fresh air’ into your life.
