Dream Patterns Across the Life Cycle: How Age Influences Sleep and Dreams
Sleep patterns vary significantly across different age groups, with people generally sleeping less soundly as they age. Stage 4, or deep sleep, almost disappears among the elderly. However, studies of dreams throughout life show less dramatic changes.
Dream Frequency Across Age Groups
In one study, participants were subdivided into four age groups—21–34, 35–49, 50–64, and 65 and over. Subjects in the 21–34 and 50–64 groups reported having more dreams than the other two groups, highlighting variations in dream frequency as people age.
Dream Content and Age
The most striking finding was a direct correlation between age and the frequency of dreams about death and dying. Additionally, retired individuals, especially those institutionalized, often report dreams reflecting a lack of resources.
Dreams Near the End of Life
Among those nearing the end of life, dreams frequently involve themes of life after death, reflecting concerns or beliefs about what comes next.
